WRISA is a state chapter of the National Federation of Nonpublic School State Accrediting Associations which is recognized by the College Board and the Office of Non-Public Education, an office within the U. S. Department of Education.
St. John Bosco Catholic School is committed to providing academic excellence with a strong foundation in basic skills. The curriculum is built on national and state standards and is updated annually to reflect the growing body of educational research.
Passing on the tradition of the faith to our students is the most important aspect of our program. Students in Grades PK-8 are presented with instruction in the basic beliefs of our faith, prayer and worship, sacraments, Christian morality, scripture and social justice. Students are provided opportunities to celebrate special seasons of the liturgical year and participate in preparing and serving in various roles at Mass. Catholic customs and devotions are taught and practiced as a regular part of the school program. In addition, students participate in grade level and school wide service projects designed to reach the broader community.
Beginning in the early grades students are exposed to a variety of literature. Reading skills are systematically developed throughout the grades. Language development is further enhanced by the study of English grammar, vocabulary and spelling. Writing skills including handwriting is integrated with the language arts program. Students are provided with many opportunities to practice their written communication skills by producing stories, poems, projects, plays, essays and reports. In addition, the effective use of oral language is developed through speech, drama, and oral presentations.
Learning to enjoy the exploration of numbers is an important part of the mathematics program. Students are challenged to develop skills in number theory, computation, problem solving, geometry, measurement, decimals and fractions. Students in the sixth grade who qualify have the option of completing a full year of Pre-Algebra.
The social studies program incorporates history, geography, economics, civics, and current events. Students in the primary grades focus instruction on family, friends and communities. Intermediate grade students study the regions of our country, Wisconsin history, and early United States History. Middle school students focus on Geography, World History, and American History.
Science and Health
A hands-on approach to science is supported in the early grades. Students in grades K-8 learn scientific inquiry methods by exploring topics such as: air and weather, solar energy, structures of life, balance and motion, magnetism and electricity, and land forms. Science kits provide opportunities for hands on learning experiences.
The ultimate goal of our technology instruction is to help the students to develop lifelong skills to assist them in using various media to enhance their learning. The curriculum for technology includes computer keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet skills, electronic presentations, desktop publishing, and graphics.
Music is a vital part of human existence, culture and religion. Music education is provided to students with diverse abilities in an environment, which encourage the desire to develop one’s personal best. The curriculum includes singing, performing with musical instruments, reading music, creating and evaluating musical performances, and understanding music in relation to history and culture.
The arts are an important part of the formation of our students. The curriculum treats art as a subject for study yet allows for the joy of the creative act. It draws forth from students an appreciation for beauty and an understanding of the universal language of images. The curriculum includes understanding techniques and processes using a variety of media, understanding the characteristic and merits of one’s own artwork and that of others, as well as understanding visual arts in relation to culture and history.
The physical education program is designed to promote lifetime physical fitness and recreational interests. The curriculum is designed to give the students planned structured physical activities that allow them opportunities to explore a variety of experiences. The program
includes physical skill development, health enhancing fitness, and social skill development.
All students in grades 5-8 are given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument as part of the school band. Individual lessons and total band instruction are part of the school program. This instruction opens the door for our students to explore new skills and talents which they may want to develop further in junior high.
Students in grades 5-8 meet everyday. Reading, writing, and speaking are all part of daily instruction of Spanish.
