Cohesive, Hands-On Learning Experience

We are excited to bring Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to St. John Bosco! PLTW is an American nonprofit organization that develops STEM curricula for elementary, middle, and high schools.

We believe all students – beginning at a young age – need access to real-world, applied learning experiences that empower them to gain the skills they need to thrive in college, career, and beyond. That’s why our pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science provide hands-on learning opportunities. PLTW’s research-supported approach empowers students to discover and explore interests, imagine and design solutions to real-world challenges, and become independent, confident problem solvers.

Our Elementary (K-5) Program: Inspiring. Engaging. Empowering.

Your K-5 students already have the qualities of great designers and innovators. What PLTW does is tap into their exploratory nature, engage them in learning that feels like play, and encourage them to keep discovering. The program empowers students to adopt a design-thinking mindset through compelling activities, projects, and problems that build upon each other and relate to the world around them. And as students engage in hands-on activities in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, they become creative, collaborative problem solvers ready to take on any challenge. Whether designing a car safety belt or building digital animations, students engage in critical and creative thinking, build teamwork skills, and learn to try and try again when faced with challenges.

The 5th graders have been busy designing and building a toy in Mrs. Fritsch’s science class. The toy needed to have at least one moving part. It had to be completed within a limited time frame and use the parts provided in their kits.

Our Middle School (6-8) Program: PLTW Gateway Sparks Engagement and Illuminates Possibilities

Middle school is a time of exploration, a time when students are figuring out what they’re passionate about today and how that relates to who they’ll become tomorrow. During this transitional time, PLTW units empower students to lead their own discovery. The hands-on program boosts classroom engagement and excitement, drives collaboration, and inspires “aha! moments” and deep comprehension. And as students engage in PLTW’s activities in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, they see a range of paths and possibilities they can look forward to in high school and beyond. Students apply knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines. By tackling challenges like designing a therapeutic toy for a child with cerebral palsy, creating their own app, or solving a medical mystery, students are empowered to make a real-world impact.
